Lucknow, Apr 27 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government, which had so far refused a CBI probe into the murder of Mehar Bhargava, today faced a piquant situation after Governor T V Rajeswar urged Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to order a central probe into the crime.

Principal Secretary (Home) S K Agarwal admitted to receiving a letter from Raj Bhawan in this regard.

''As the matter has been made public, the government will decide on the issue only after considering all aspects,'' he told mediapersons here.

Earlier, the Governor wrote a letter to the Chief Minister for a CBI probe as the state police had failed to nab the prime suspect in the case.

In his letter, he also referred to the memoranda submitted to him by various political parties demanding a probe by the investigating.

agency.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BSP supremo Mayawati and Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot, Pramod Teari and Salman Khurshid have repeatedly demanded a CBI probe into the killing, the Governor said.

Police, however, maintained the case was likely to be solved soon as the eye-witnesses had identified the killer -- Amit Singh, who is at present under judicial custody. The police was yet to nab the prime suspect of the incident, Sachin Pahari.

Earlier, Mr Yadav had rejected the demand by the opposition parties for a CBI probe into the incident saying UP Police, with the help of the Special Task Force (STF), was competent to solve the case.
