Steps to curb trafficing of women, children in Punjab

Chandigarh, Apr 27 (UNI) To curb the menace of trafficking of women and children in Punjab, State Chief Secretary K R Lakhanpal has directed all concerned departments to draw a specific action plan to combat it effectively.

Presiding a high-level meeting of state co-ordination committee held here yesterday, Mr Lakhanpal asked NGOs to participate and extend a helping hand to the State Government in curbing this menace.

The Chief Secretary also discussed the problem of adverse sex ratio and migration of women from other states and the impact thereof on the society.

He exhorted that special police officers be appointed to combat immoral trafficking and child abuse in the state. People should be educated and awareness created against anti-trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

Mr R L Kalsia, Secretary, Social Security and Development of Women and Children, informed the members about draft proposal amendment in the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1956 (ITPA), as forwarded by the Central government, for enhancing punishment for traffickers and brothel keepers.
