Myanmar destroys massive seizure of illicit drugs and equipment
Bangkok, Apr 27 (UNI) Myanmar's military regime has destroyed a massive seizure of illicit drugs and drug-making machinery worth more than one billion US dollars in the presence of diplomats and anti-narcotics officials from neighbouring countries.
The incineration of the narcotics in the country's eastern Shan region yesterday was a demonstration of commitment to rid the country of illicit drugs by the year 2014, Myanmarese authorities here said.
The illicit drugs with an estimated international value of 1.5 billion US dollars, were seized in four separate operations over a two-year period and included 1,000 kg of heroin and nearly 15 million methamphetamine tablets.
''We're delighted with this achievement, and glad, especially with the regional and international cooperation in the fight against drugs,'' Pol Major General Khin Yee, Director General Myanmar's Police Department and Secretary-General of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control said.
Officials and diplomats from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and China witnessed the destruction of the narcotics.
