Udupi, Apr 27 (UNI) The Nagarjuna Vidyut Sthavara Virodhi Samithi, comprising various political parties and fishermen associations, today demanded that the Karnataka Government immediately withdraw the clearances given for establishing a coal-based thermal power project near Padubidre in this district.

Addressing a joint press conference here, Nagarika Seva Trust Chief Co-ordinator K Somnath Nayak, Nandikur Jana Jagrithi Samithi President Laxaman Shetty and Daxina Kannada Fishermen Association representative Vasudev Bolur said the government should not allow the Nagarjuna Power Corporation (NPC) to set up the 1015 mw plant in this eco-sensitive district and withdraw the clearances given to it immediately.

They also wanted the government to withdraw all cases foisted on the leaders opposing the project.

The Samithi representatives would soon meet Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and his deputy B S Yediyurappa to press for their demands. If their demands were not met, the Samithi would launch a protest on May 16, they informed.

At a meeting here, the Samithi also decided to stage an agitation at Gokarna on May 10 to protest against the proposed 4000 mw power plant at Tadadi.
