TVM division earns 292 cr in passenger traffic

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 26 (UNI) The Trivandrum Division of the Southern Railway has earned Rs 292 crore in passenger traffic and Rs 92 crore in freight traffic during 2005-2006.

The Division transported about 2.28 million tonnes of freight during the period, said Shaji Zacharia, Senior Divisonal Engineer, while addressing a meeting here today.

Major items of freight handled by the Division included petroleum products, fertilisers, coal and containers.

Mr Zacharia said 53 express/mail trains and 58 passenger trains were operated by the Division, carrying daily about two-lakh passengers. The Division is giving top priority in providing passenger amenities and nearly Rs 3.7 crore were spent on this during the last financial year, he added.

Sophisticated systems of passenger information, including touch screen system had been installed at major Railway stations.

The electrification works on Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram line, both via Kottayam and Alappuzha are expected to be completed during the current financial year, he added.
