Light weight torpedos to be inducted in defence in 2 years
Hyderabad, Apr 26 (UNI) Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NSTL) Director Dr V Bhujanga Rao today said the NSTL had asked the Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to produce 25 light weight torpedos, which would be inducted in naval services in two years.
Addressing the press here, Dr Rao said the light weight torpedo, having six to eight km range, weighing about 200 kg, could be launched from ships and helicopters. The technology developed by the NTSL indegenously would be available by 2008.
Stating that the seven countries including USA, UK, Russia, Sweden, Germany and Italy had already acquired torpedo technology, he said the NTSL was also working on heavy weight torpedos which would be inducted in defence by 2009-10.
He said the heavy weight torpedos would have six to eight mt length, ranging from 20 to 30 km, weigh about 1700 kg and would have capacity of carrying 300 kg high energy explosives.
Mr Rao said NTSL was doing research and laboratory tests to develop 'state-of-the-art'technology for producing heavy weight torpedos.
