Zahira receives notice from Income Tax, Baroda

Mumbai, Apr 25 (UNI) Income Tax department at Baroda in Gujarat has sent notice to Zahira Shaikh, the prime witness in the Best Bakery case, to file her returns for the assessment year 2005-06.

Zahira's counsel Umesh Deshpande said that she had received the notice sent by D R Chhatre, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Baroda, on April 12.

He said that ''we will be filing the reply to the notice soon.'' The IT department is investigating into Zahira's source of income since 2000 as per the Supreme Court's directive.

The Supreme Court, while sentencing Zahira to one-year imprisonment for contempt of court on March 8, had directed the Commissioner of Income Tax, Baroda, to attach her assets and bank accounts and initiate an inquiry into her sources of income.

Zahira is presently serving her one-year prison term in the Byculla Jail here.
