SC adjourns till May 5 bail plea of UP MLA
New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court has adjourned till May 5 the hearing of a petition of a Uttar Pradesh MLA Akhilesh Pratap Singh involved in at least 40 criminal cases including murder, kidnapping and extortion etc. challenging an Allahabad high court order cancelling his bail.
A bench comprising Mr Justice K G Balakrishanan and Mr Justice D.K. Jain on Monday adjourned the hearing due to paucity of time.
The petitioner who is in jail at present is seeking his release on bail on the ground that he had not misused his liberty and had not threatened any witness in the case pending against him.
The high court had cancelled his bail in a murder case on the petition filed by the state. The state had sought cancellation of his bail on the grounds that free and fairc trial was not possible if the accused remained free in view of his terror and political clout in the area.
