Rana was living in Bangladesh as Sanjay Gupta : Police

Dehradun, Apr 25 (UNI) The police today said Sher Singh Rana, prime accused in Phoolan Devi murder case, was living in Khulna, Bangladesh as Sanjay Gupta.

A combined team of Delhi and Uttaranchal police arrested Rana last night, from a PCO in Dharamtalla in Kolkata, who escaped from the Tihar jail in 2004.

Uttaranchal DIG, Garhwal range, R S Meena told reporters here acting on an information that Rana was planning to come to India to extend his visa, the special police team rounded him at Kolkata.

He said the passport held by Rana in Sanjay Gupta's name was made from Ranchi, Bihar. He also informed that before going to Bangladesh Rana had been to Kabul, Dubai, Kandahar, Herat and Gaza after he escaped from Tihar jail.

He has also been to Moradabad, Ranchi, Gaya, Phulve, Dhanbad, Patna and Devgarh.

He said Subhash Thakur, one of the inmates who escaped the Jail with Rana and was later nabbed had been providing money to Rana through Hawala during this period.

The DIG did not ruled out possibilities of Rana's links with Dubai underworld.

Rana, a resident of Gangnahar Roorkie, Uttaranchal was previously booked under seven different cases, however, he was not in the wanted list of Uttaranchal police, he said.
