UP plans Rs 340 crore expenditure on flood control
Lucknow, Apr 23 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has planned an expenditure of Rs 340 crore on flood control measures this year.
State irrigation and flood control minister Meraj-ud-din Ahmad today said the safety measures would include building 355 km long embankments and special drains.
Of UP's 236.29 lakh hectares total geographical area, around 73 lakh hectares is flood prone.
''Till March 2006, we incurred Rs 756 crore to secure almost 16.34 lakh hectares from floods,'' he informed.
Almost 1,982 km long embankments and 13,427 kms long drains had been constructed so far. ''The level of 4,571 villages was also raised to protect against floods.'' In 2005-06, a total of Rs 331 crore was spent in various schemes.
