Srinagar-Leh road accorded NH status

Jammu, Apr 23 (UNI) Centre has accorded National Highway status to the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, an official release today said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, according to the statement, told Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad over phone that the notification to this effect has been issued by the concerned Ministry.

The demand for NH was pending before the Centre since long and Mr Azad had recently taken up the issue with Dr Singh, requesting him to make early annoncement in this regard.

The new status would enhance development work on the road and make travel more comfortable for the tourists and local commuters.
