Public rally in Meghalaya raises demand for separate state
Shillong, Apr 23 (UNI) Demand for a separate Garo state reverberated in Tura, as thousands of people in the Garo Hills gathered at a rally putting the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on a tight rope.
An estimated 35,000 people assembled in the rally at the Tura Coal India Stadium yesterday, which was organised by the Coordination Committee of all the NGOs from the Garo Hills district.
Coordination Committee convenor Sengrak Marak spoke on the need of carving out a separate Garoland for safeguarding the interests of the Garo people in Meghalaya.
Other leaders, who addressed the rally included Garo Students Union (GSU) president Andreas T Sangma, Joint Action Committee (JAC) secretary Rakkam Sangma and AYCO president Ramke Marak.
People of the Garo tribe have intensified their demand for a separate state following the imbroglio concerning the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE).
The Garo Hills district had seen intense agitation in the later half of last year after the State Government decided to set up a regional MBOSE office in Shillong in addition to its existing head office at Tura in the Garo Hills.
