Police callousness; acquitted 'PO' jailed

New Delhi, Apr 23 (UNI) A man who had been declared 'Proclaimed Offender' but later acquitted by a city court, still had to go to jail because the police only saw that he was a PO without bothering about the court order.

Md Tanvir and four others were charged with attempt to murder in 1997 but before the court let off all of them, he stopped being present at the trial and was declared PO.

Tanvir was declared PO after he stopped coming to court in Febuary 2002. In July the same year, all the accused, including Tanvir, were acquitted.

Police, however, continued to be on his look out without updating itself with the court proceedings. On being 'found' Tanvir was arrested and jailed on April 3.

Only when he was brought before the court on April 19, the mistake was realized and Tanvir was released.
