Hospitals in Kathmandu packed with injured persons

Kathmandu, Apr 23: Hospitals in the capital and across the country are packed people injured during anti-monarchy protests.

More than 200 people were injured in yesterday's massive protests where thousands of people broke past barricades on the Ring Road and moved closer before being dispersed by police, who lobbed tear-gas and fired rubber bullets.

The condition of six people is said to be critical.

Dr Sarita Pandey of the Kathmandu Hospital, where more than 160 were admitted yesterday, said over 50 per cent of the injured suffer from head injuries while ten percent have fractured bones.

The total number of injured could be more than 500 and most of them were taken by security forces, the Kantipur quoted General Secretary of Nepal Medical Association Dr Kiran Shrestha as saying.

The injured have been admitted in Teaching hospital, Model hospital and various other hospitals of the Kathmandu valley.

The security forces have been condemned for the excessive use of force to control the demonstrators, who are demanding the end of monarchy and establishment of full fledged democracy in the Himalayan nation.

Meanwhile, an Eleven hour curfew, starting from 0900 hrs local time, has been imposed today. Trucks carrying heavily armed riot police personnels, sped across the streets to take up positions around the arterial roads leading to the royal palace.
