Engine derails, rail traffic hit

Chennai, Apr 23: Rail traffic from Chennai Central Railway Station was badly affected last night after an engine derailed near Elephant Gate here.

Railway sources said the engine derailed at 2100 hrs as it approached Elephant Gate from the Basin Bridge. The engineering staff could restore normalcy only at midnight.

Apart from the huge delay suffered by few incoming trains, the Chennai Central-New Delhi Tamil Nadu Express was detained for about 20 minutes while the Chennai-Erode Yercaud Express and the Chennai-Dadar Special got delayed by 50 and 55 minutes respectively.

The Chennai-Dadar Express and Chennai Central-Howrah Express trains also suffered a delay of 25 minutes each, they added.
