SAARC ministers to review execution of convention against terrorism

Dhaka, Apr 22 (UNI) SAARC Home Ministers will sit here on May 11 to review the progress in executing a regional agreement on suppression of terrorism on May 11 here.

The SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression on Terrorism commits the member-countries of the South Asian forum to suppressing acts of terrorism in the region. Official sources said the meeting would also review the progress in implementation of the SAARC Convention on ''Narcotic and Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.'' The Home Ministers would discuss the role of SAARC Terrorist Offences Monitoring Desk (STOMD) and SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD).

Other agenda of the meeting include SAARC and UN office on drugs and crimes (UNODC) and matters relating to cooperation between SAARC and ASEAN in the areas of drugs and trans-national crimes.

The SAARC Home Ministers meeting will be preceded by SAARC Home Secretaries meeting May 9-10 to consider, among other matters, the report of the 5th SAARC conference on cooperation in policing.

The meeting would also consider a revised concept paper on a proposal for the establishment of regional institutions called ''SAARCPOL.'' It will review the progress in eradicating drug abuse, drug trafficking, and money laundering and consider the matter of cooperation in the provision of required training, techniques and technology for police investigation.
