London, Apr 16 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on April 23 since 1900: 1915 - Rupert Brooke, British World War One poet, died of blood poisoning off Skiros, Greece.
1941 - King George of the Hellenes and the Greek government fled the Greek mainland as German forces advanced in World War Two; the Greek army surrendered.
1945 - The Soviet army liberated the Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrueck Nazi concentration camps.
1986 - Otto Preminger, Austrian-born film director, died.
His films included ''Laura'', ''Carmen Jones'' and ''Exodus''.
1990 - Chinese Premier Li Peng arrived in Moscow, the most senior Chinese leader to pay an official visit since 1964.
1992 - Satyajit Ray, Indian film director best known for ''Pather Panchali'', died only three weeks after being awarded a lifetime achievement Oscar.
1998 - James Earl Ray, convicted of the 1968 assassination of U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, died aged 70.
1999 - Indonesia and Portugal completed an agreement paving the way for the people of East Timor to vote on their future.
2001 - Self-styled reformer Junichiro Koizumi won a stunning victory in an election for the presidency of Japan's main governing party and thus became prime minister.
2002 - Argentina's fifth economy minister in just over a year quit, dealing a severe blow to President Eduardo Duhalde as he struggled to avert a banking collapse.
2005 - British actor Sir John Mills, who won an Oscar in 1971 for his portrayal of a mute village idiot in the film ''Ryan's Daughter,'' died aged 97.
