Maoists should be kept in mainstream in Nepal : CPI(M)

Kolkata, Apr 22(UNI) Describing the Maoists as an 'emerging social force' in Nepal, the CPI(M) today said the seven-party alliance should sustain the 12-point joint programme by keeping 'the ultra left outfit in the mainstream of the pro-democracy' movement.

''The Maoists are emerging as a major catalystic and social force in the pro-democracy movement in Nepal. It is necessary that they remain in the mainstream of the struggle and the 12-point programme should be pursued jointly with them,'' CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said here.

Reacting on behalf of the party to the development in the Himalayan Kingdom, in which King Gyanendra announced handing over power to the people, Mr.Yechury said if the Maoists remained in the mainstream of the people's popular movement, it would have a positive effect on the ultra left forces in India as well.

''We have told the seven parties that it was up to them to decide the shape of democracy in their country. But the Maoists should be encouraged to continue as a partner of their movement,'' he said.

The CPI(M) leader said the Maoists in Nepal had joined hands with the democratic parties following an inner-party debate over the past couple of years and that trend must be nurtured not only for Nepal, but also for the 'future of Indian and international politics.' Mr Yechury's comments came a day after the Nepal monarch asked the seven-party alliance to recommend the name of a prime minister.

However, the seven parties rejected the offer saying that he had not addressed the minimum demands of the alliance.

India welcomed the King's ''intention'' to transfer all executive power to the seven-party alliance saying the action should now pave way for restoration of political stability and economic recovery in the country.
