Mahajan's liver still oozing blood

Mumbai, Apr 22 (UNI) Following is the text of medical bullletin issued on the condition of senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, who suffered critical gunshot wounds when attacked allegedly by his younger brother Pravin Mahajan at his Worli residence in Central Mumbai this morning.

The bulletin was issued by Dr Anupam Verma, Dean of Hinduja hospital where the BJP leader is presently under constant observation in its intensive care unit(ICU).

'' Pramod Mahajan was brought to P D Hinduja national hospital and medical research centre in the morning with three bullet injuries in the lower chest and abdomen. Bullets have travelled through the right lower part of the chest, through the diaphragm.

They had gone through the liver shattering right side of the liver and damaged the head of the pancreas and duodenum and damaged the Inferior Vina Cava (IVC), which is main vein in the abdomen and also injured the small intestines. These was a massive blood loss.'' ''He was immediately taken up for surgery. The injury to the inferior vena cava was repaired, bleeding stopped. The bleeding from the head of the pancreas was also stopped. Intestinal injuries were repaired. Since the injury to the liver was extensive, packs were kept to stop the bleeding. Blood transfusion was given to replace the blood loss. The major bleeding has been stopped, but from the extensive liver injury, he is still oozing. His condition at present is critical.

''He is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on ventilatory support and is receiving all best possible care. The case is being handled by a team headed by Dr Gustad B Daver, Director professional services and surgeon and Dr Vinod Chandiramani, Dr Sudeep Shah, Dr Manoj Agni from hinduja hospital and Dr Bhattacharya was also invited to help.''
