Joint effort to check poaching of wildlife

Nawada, Apr 22 (UNI) Alarmed by recent poaching of seven deer and one Neel Gai in Dhav forest of Nawada district in Bihar, the forest department has sought help of police to maintain vigil in the reserved forests adjoining Jharkhand.

''The number of wildlife is fast depleting in the forests of Nawada district extended to Jharkhand over the recent years partly due to poaching and primarily for migration of animals to thick forests in search of fodder and running water'', said a forest official.

''Non availability of forest guards to maintain round the clock vigil in the vast reserve forest is the main hurdle in checking poaching of animals'', the official maintained.

Altogether seven deer and one Neel Gai were killed by the poachers during the last three days.

Besides making suitable arrangements for providing fodder and water to the animals, forest officials had been asked to work in tandem with the local police to check poaching, the official added.

Citing recent animal census, the official said that 11 peacocks, 20 deer, 22 Neel Gais, 38 Hyenas, 42 wild dogs, 106 foxes, 117 monkeys, 5 wolf. 6 beers and 7 wild cats had been detected in the reserve forest.
