Doctors on strike over attack after child's death
Chennai, Apr 22 : Hundreds of patients, mostly children, who came to Government Children's Hospital were not given treatment as doctors and paramedical staff continued their strike for the second day today.
The strike comes in the wake of the attack on two doctors on duty by a mob protesting the death of a 12-day-old infant at the hospital on thursday.
Police said the infant was admitted to hospital with a congenital brain problem. After the child died, the parents charged the doctors with failure to give proper treatment and took the body home.
Later, around 25 angry relatives of the deceased, forcibly entered the emergengy ward of the hospital and attacked duty doctors Suresh Kumar and Anand with iron rods.
Dr Suresh Kumar received injuries and was admitted to the Government General Hospital here.
In support of their strike, the medical fraternity in Government General Hospital, Stanley Hospital, Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and Royapettah Hospital also went on strike today.
