Australian soldier dies in Iraq

MELBOURNE, Apr 22: An Australian soldier has died in Iraq after receiving a single gunshot wound yesterday, the Department of Defence said today.

''The soldier was taken to a United States military hospital where he later died. There were no other personnel injured during the incident,'' the department said in a statement.

''The incident was not related to combat action. Further details of the incident will not be released until a full investigation has been completed.'' The department said the soldier died whilst serving with the Operation Catalyst Security Detachment (SECDET) in Baghdad.
