Jaipur, Apr 21 (UNI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) is not happy with Rajasthan's performance regarding women welfare.

Mrs Girija Vyas, chairperson, NCW, while stating this at a press meet here today, said: ''The state could have done better if all the NCW guidelines given last year were followed in totality. In the eight state review performed by NCW, Rajasthan still scores highest in child marriages.'' She added: '' Although around 2,200 child marriages were stopped last year, much more needs to be done in this field.'' The NCW today held a meeting with state government officials and communicated its concern on various women issues and the steps it needs to initiate in this direction.

The NCW has asked the state government to prepare a five-year programme to root out child marriages completely. It said the registration of marriages should be made compulsory and emphasised on the need for more community marriages, which will help weed out these harmful traditional practices.

The NCW has also asked the state government to begin 'gender education' in schools, especially to empower the girl students.

The increasing number of female foeticide cases in the state, which have come out in the open through the recent media sting operations, is a cause of concern for NCW.

Giving the figures, Mrs Vyas focused on the alarmingly decreasing sex ratios in most districts of the state. She said: ''Ganganagar has the lowest sex ratio with 815 girls per 1000 boys in rural areas, while the same is 863 in urban areas.'' The NCW has asked the state government to form a special cell on the lines of the one formed at the Centre to monitor the female foeticide cases.

In rape cases, Rajasthan recorded 1,036 cases in 2004 as against India's total of 15,618. The NCW also raised the issue of rising HIV cases in the state along with increased trafficking of girls in Dholpur, Karauli and Bharatpur areas.

The only positive point, Mrs Vyas, said was the implementation of the post of one policewoman at every police station which has helped raise the total women police force in the state to two percent.
