Ranchi, Apr 21 (UNI) The Jharkhand government has decided to provide life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh to surrendered naxals in the state.

State Home Minister Sudeh Mahato said under the policy the surrendered ultras would be free to hire a lawyer of their own choice.

Talking to UNI here today he said the policy would be implemented within three days. He said the insurance cover was being provided to them to reassure them that they would not be eliminated in the custody. The state government would also bear the cost of the lawyers, he added.

After the policy was implemented, the extremists after surrender would also receive a cash of Rs 25,000 in two instalments as compensation and another Rs 2000 per month as stipend for two years, he said.

Mr Mahato said if any ultra surrendered with arms then the cost of the firearm would also be reimbursed.

As another incentive the ultras would be kept together in the Capital town and all their cases would also be transferred to the court of the capital, he said adding special fast-track-courts would be constituted to expedite trials and a review committee would monitor their conduct and recommend reduction or remission of sentences.

Under the policy a plot of one acre land would be provided to the family of each of the surrendered ultras. The family would be entitled to free housing, free education for children and free health-care facilities, the minister stated.

The minister claimed that Jharkhand was the first state to formulate such a policy for the surrendered naxals in the country.
