IT collection less by Rs 800 crore in MP, C'garh

Bhopal, Apr 21 (UNI) The Income Tax department has collected Rs 4,519 crore income tax against a target of Rs 3,721 crore in 2005-06,for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Chief Income Tax Commissioner (Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh) A K Luthra told reporters here today that revenue collection fell short by around Rs 800 crore due to decline in income of two companies including the South Eastern Coal Field Limited (SECL).

Mr Luthra said Rs 3,388 crore income tax was collected in 2004-05 against a target of Rs 3,195 crore. No target has been set for 2006-07 so far.

He said Rs 2,004 crore had been collected for Bhopal region for 2005-06 against a target of Rs 2,020 crore. The process of collection was underway and on completion Rs 2,030 crore will be accumulated.

Elaborating upon other achievements of the department, Mr Luthra said 5,61,322 persons and firms, including 24,957 new persons, had filed returns in 2005-06. Last fiscal, 14,978 new persons had filed returns.

He said advance tax and tax deducted at source registered a rise of 183 and 73 per cent as compared to last fiscal.

Mr Luthra said the department had identified additional income of Rs 19.47 crore and imposed tax of Rs 5.8 crore in around 200 cases.
