India-Syria to draw a work plan for coop in agri

New Delhi, Apr 21: India and Syria today agreed to draw a work plan to identify specific activities for cooperation in agriculture and allied fields, which the two countries could undertake in the next two years.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria M. Farooq Taha called on Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria at the latter's office here. He also invited a delegation from India to visit Syria in August this year for the purpose.

Mr Taha, is currently on a visit to India in connection with Foreign Office consultations between India and Syria.

The two Ministers had wide ranging discussions on ways and means of enhancing agricultural cooperation as agriculture plays a very significant role in the economies of both the countries.

Mr Bhuria conveyed the earnest desire of his Government to extend suitable assistance for further development of agriculture in Syria.

Mr Taha recognised the impressive strides made by Indian agriculture and the contributions of Indian farmers and scientists in making their country self-sufficient in its foodgrains requirement and expressed his hope that India could contribute to strengthening Syrian Agriculture.

Both the Ministers expressed confidence that cooperation in agriculture will foster still closer ties between India and Syria and therefore, the two Governments would accord priority to this area.

Mr Taha also extended an invitation of his Government to Mr Bhuria to visit Syria.
