Fernandes against demilitarisation of Siachen

Bangalore, Apr 21 (UNI) Former Defence Minister and NDA Convener today opposed the Centre's move to delimilitarise Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, in Jammu and Kashmir as it was detrimental to the nation's security.

Talking to newspersons here, he said ''It is not a joke to get the forces back and send them when the situation worsens.'' He said the move would help Pakistan which was already enjoying an advantageous position having occupied greater heights in the region.

Mr Fernandes felt that most of the casualties reported from Siachen were mainly due to adverse weather condition and not battle with Pakistani forces.
