Srinagar, Apr 20 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir government today appointed Dr Rafiq Masoodi as Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages for two years.

Prior to this, Dr Masoodi was the Deputy Director General of All India Radio.

The post had been lying vacant following the retirement of Mr Ramesh Mehta.

Dr Masoodi, a noted Hindi writer and winner of the Sahitya Academy Award for his book Tamas, became the 16th Secretary of the Academy.

He has written about one dozen books in Hindi and other languages.

Talking to reporters after joining the office, Dr Masoodi said it would be the Academy's endeavour to organise functions in all areas of the state to promote literature and languages such as Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu, Hindi, Gojri, Pahari, Balti and Ladakhi besides providing suitable platform to young and budding writers.

The main objective of these programmes would be to bring together the artists, writers, musicians and theatre activists from all over the state, he added.

Dr Masoodi also urged the writers to come forward and help the Academy in its endeavour and impressed upon the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help in searching the new talent and work for promotion of the state's cultural heritage.
