Unorganised workers' plea to PM on Narmada Dam
Chennai, Apr 19: Reminding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of his poll promise of''development with human face,'' the Unorganised Workers Federation here has urged him to stop the work on increasing the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam till the affected people were rehabilitated.
In a memorandum, the Federation appealed to the Prime Minister to take a stand in consonance with basic principles of the Indian Constitution and protect the right to life and livelihood of the evacuees.
Reminding him the report of three Central Ministers, who visited the areas recently, had shown no proper rehabilitation had taken place, they expressed shock that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had ''diverted'' the issues raised by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) by launching a fast to justify the ''callous attitude and lack of truth.'' ''We wish to state, development cannot be separated from human rights and social justice,'' the federation said.
