Railways begin new fiscal with upsurge in finances

New Delhi, Apr 19: The Railways, which earned a fund surplus of Rs 11,000 crore last year, has begun the new fiscal with an upsurge in its income, earning Rs 1603.32 crore during the first ten days of April as compared to Rs. 1407.98 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 13.87 per cent.

The total goods earnings of Rs.1070.47 crore showed an increase of 17.31 per cent during this period as compared to Rs. 912.53 crore earned during the same period last year.

The total passenger fare earnings during April 1-10 were Rs.

483.70 crore compared to Rs. 455.85 crore earned during the corresponding period last year.

The total revenue earnings from other coaching during this period were Rs. 39.40 crore as compared to Rs. 30.97 crore during the corresponding period last year.

The total number of passengers booked during this period were 173.72 million compared to 162.34 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 7.01 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the total number of passengers booked during this period were 99.97 million and 73.75 million compared to 95.20 million and 67.14 million respectively, during the corresponding period last year, a Railway Ministry spokesperson said today.
