Mahindra targets higher mkt share with new Scorpio

Kolkata, Apr 19: Leading utility vehicles manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra is aiming at higher share of the market with the launch of its new Scorpio, its vice-president (marketing) Vivek Nayer said today.

Last year Scorpio maintained 12 per cent market share in the car category having prices above Rs five lakh.

''Last year we sold 31,000 Scorpios. We are looking at significant growth this year,'' Nayer said without elaborating the figures.

Mahindra is also looking at doubling exports of Scorpio's.

Scorpio's has been launched at South Africa, Malaysia, Middle East and Italy among other countries. The car will be taken to other potential markets in the near future, the official said.

''The capacity at the Nasik plant manufacturing Scorpios has already been expanded and the demands of both the domestic and international markets will be catered through the Nasik plant,'' Nayer said.

The company hopes to maintain growth targets in all the categories at a time when the industry is growing at 6-8 per cent per annum, he said.

Mahindra's vice-president (R&D) Dr Arun Jaura said Logan the first mid-sized car built by JV with Renault of France will be launched by October 2007.
