HC upheld LC order sentencing 17 to life imprisonment

Chennai, Apr 19 (UNI) Madras High Court today upheld an order of a lower court, convicting and sentencing 17 accused to life imprisonment in a murder case Melavalavu Panchayat President Murugesan and five others were hacked to death by the accused when they were returning, from Madurai to their village, by a private bus on June 30, 1997.

A division bench comprising Mr Justice P Sathasivam and Mr Justice N Paul Vansanthakumar dismissed the appeals filed by Alagarsamy and 16 others, challenging an order of the Principal Sessions Judge (PSJ), Salem dated July 26, 2001, awarding life sentence to them.

The bench also dismissed a criminal revision petition filed by M Kumar and two others, challenging the acquittal of 23 other accused in the case by the trial court.
