Keshpur (West Midnapore), WB, Apr 17: Former Election Commission observer K J Rao visited different parts of the district today in his new incarnation as a poll analyst during the first phase polling in West Bengal.

The 64-year-old former bureaucrat, who made a whirlwind tour across the state a couple of months ago for revision of electoral rolls and played a key role in making photo identity card mandatory, was seen moving around largely in the Keshpur area, said to be a stronghold of the CPI(M), taking stock of the situation with his notebook.

Mr Rao was here as an exclusive in-house expert for a Bengali news channel to offer in-depth commentaries on the elections.

Talking to reporters, Mr Rao said the election was peaceful and transparent. '' There is no violence or any untoward incident. The people are casting votes spontaneously, '' he said.

He said he had seen a large number of booths in Keshpur without any polling agent of the Opposition parties. '' Now I feel that there is hardly any worker for the Opposition parties, '' he said.

Mr Rao, who was instrumental in enforcing the EC restrictions during the Bihar Assembly elections last year, resigned last month on personal ground ending his service-on-extention.

To a question, Mr Rao said he did not see anything wrong in providing an unprecedented security cover for polling in the state, saying the measure was expected to instil a sense of confidence among the voters.

He said though the local villagers were not used to see Central Para Military Force jawans, they would definitely overcome the fear following a peaceful and free and fair polling.
