Dr Kurien appointed first chancellor of Allahabad University

Vadodara, Apr 17 (UNI) Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of White Revolution in the country, has been appointed as the first Chancellor of the Allahabad University for a five-year term.

A communication to this effect was received by Dr Kurien from the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry today.

In a brief reaction on his new appointment, the octogenarian ''Milkman of India'' told UNI over phone from Anand that he was glad to have been appointed as the first Chancellor of the University of Allahabad.

According to his executive assistant P A Joseph, Dr Kurien's appointment order, issued by Under Secretary S S Mahalawat, had come into force with immediate effect as he had already given his consent to take up the new assignment.

The legendary dairy co-operative leader recently tendered his resignation as chairman of the Rs 3600-crore Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) after heading the country's largest dairy cooperative for 33 years since its inception in 1973.

Eighty four-year-old Dr Kurien, who settled down in the milk city of Anand 60 years ago for transforming rural India through the cooperative dairy movement, is currently chairman of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) which he established in 1979 to produce professional rural managers in partnership with rural people.
