Congress demands shifting of POSCO site in Orissa
Bhubaneswar, Apr 17(UNI) The Congress in Orissa today demanded shifting of the site proposed for the 12 million tonne steel plant to be set up by the South Korean steel major POSCO.
Addressing newsmen here a fact-finding team of the Orissa Congress, led by party MLA Umesh Swain, said the party was neither opposed to POSCO project nor FDI, but has strong reservation over the selection of the site by the government.
Mr Swain said nearly 20,000 people in three panchayats of Bada Kujanga, Nuagaon and Dhinkia under Ersama block of Jagatsinghpur district would be badly affected in the POSCO project.
He claimed that the people would lose their most fertile land where they have been cultivating paddy, betel vines and vegetables if POSCO was allowed to set up the plant.
The Congress MLA said a vast stretch of vacant government land lying unused and close to these three panchayats, could be an ideal site for the project where there would be virtually no displacement.
The party, he warned, would launch a statewide agitation if the POSCO project was not shifted from the thickly populated area rich in resources.
