Veteran trade union leader Kannan passes away

Kannur, Apr 16 (UNI) Veteran trade union and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader C Kannan passed away following a prolonged illness here last night.

He was 91.

A three-time legislator, Kannan was suffering from an illness related to old age for quite some time and breathed his last at the residence of his nephew Ravindran.

Former state president of the Centre of Indian Trade Union, Kannan started his political career as a Congress activist during the pre-Independence period and later switched his loyalty to the Communist movement.

Doyen of the working class movement, Kannan was very active among the downtrodden sections of the people, especially in the Malabar region.

Known as C among his followers cutting across political affiliations, Kannan served jail term for nine years during the pre and post Independence period.

He represented Kannur constituency in the state assembly in 1957 and Edakkad twice in 1965 and 67.
