UP Police chief not impressed by dipping crime rate

Allahabad, Apr 15 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Police chief Bua Singh today said though the figures indicate a decrease in the crime rate in the state, he reposed no faith in statistics till the people, especially the women led a fear free life.

Talking to the newspersons here he said, ''If people feel safe and move freely without fear, only then will I say that the law and order situation in UP is satisfactory,'' ''Similarly, if women feel safe at night, it means the law and order situation is really good,'' he added.

The DGP said he had given clear cut instructions to his force to deal strictly with criminals.

Reiterating that the nexus between the police and criminals would not be tolerated, Mr Singh stated, ''any police personnel found guilty would not be spared.'' In reply to a question, he denied any political pressure on him.

''Action will be taken according to law,'' he said.

Mr Singh also observed it was wrong to apprehend the hand of Pakistan's secret service ISI in every incident. ''Some anti-social elements are active and we were taking action against them.'' On Naxalites, he claimed UP had been able to control such activities effectively. ''In comparison to other states, naxalism is a miniscule activity in UP. We will not allow UP to become Bihar.'' The State Police chief also refuted the charge that his force was ill-equipped in comparison to modern day criminals. ''Our force is equipped with latest weapons.'' ''I am visiting every police zone in Uttar Pradesh and apprising myself about the problems that need immediate redressal.'' UNI JL VS SB HS2102
