Oram stands firm for New Zealand
CENTURION, South Africa, Apr 16 (Reuters) Jacob Oram scored a defiant half century to steady New Zealand's reply on the second day of the first test against South Africa today.
New Zealand were 187 for six at tea in reply to South Africa's first innings of 276.
Oram was 57 not out with Daniel Vettori on 45 in a much-needed partnership of 98 for the unbroken seventh wicket.
Number six Oram came to the crease after New Zealand slumped to 38 for four, and they dwindled to 45 for five before Oram and Brendon McCullum began the fightback with a stand of 44.
Makhaya Ntini bowled with aggression and pace, exploiting the low bounce in the pitch to take three for 41 from 11 overs.
South Africa, who resumed on 266 for eight, were dismissed in the sixth over of the day's play.
