Municipal Chairman killed, DYFI activist injured in attack
Thrissur, Apr 16 (UNI) Chavakkad Municipal Corporation Chairman and CPI(M) leader K P Valsan was killed and DYFI Block Secretary A K Akbar seriously injured, when a group of people, allegedly Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) workers, hacked them at Akalad, near Vadakkekad in the district today.
Police said here the incident took place in the evening when Valsan and Akbar were travelling in an autorickshaw to assess the LDF campaign.
The duo were waylaid and hacked. While Valsan (45) died on the spot, the seriously injured Akbar was admitted to a hospital.
Political rivalry was said to be the reason behind the murder, they added.
There was a dispute on erecting party flags between the LDF and UDF workers yesterday and the issue was settled by Chavakkad Circle Inspector. The attack was believed to be the follow-up of yesterday's incident, they said.
Tension previaled in the area and top police officials with sufficient forces were camping in the area.
