Police Superintendent Abhay Kumar Prasad said here the drive was targeted against mafia, wanted criminals, especially mafia don Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi, wanted in connection with many high-profile cases including the November 29 last murder of BJP MLA from Mohammadabad (Ghazipur) Krishnanand Rai.

Raids were underway for nabbing the wanted criminals, land sharks and mafia who were still at large, Mr Prasad added.

The SP said special police teams would also be constituted for checking illegal felling of trees and smuggling of animal parts, especially turtle and cow-heads.

About yesterday's meeting of Varanasi Zone police officials with the state Director General of Police Bua Singh, Mr Prasad informed the top police official claimed that a Bangladeshi terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jehade-Islami (HUJI) was active in five East UP districts including Jaunpur at the behest of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
