Patkar's condition worsens,7 supporters on hunger strike
New Delhi, Apr 15: The condition of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar and two of her associates Jamsingh Nargave and Bhagwatiben Patidar, who today entered the 18th day of her hunger strike, has deteriorated further as her blood sugar level and blood pressure dipped, NBA sources said.
Today is the 29th day of the dharna by the NBA activists in protest against the decision of the Narmada Control Authority to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
With the 48 hour-period deadline given to the government on Wednesday, for coming out with the report of the ministerial delegation which had gone to the site of the dam to ascertain the progress of rehabilitation of the displaced people, ending yesterday, seven supporters of the NBA are on a hunger strike for three days.
These include chairman of Sarva Seva Sangh Amarnath Bhai and its secretary Sachidanand.
Filmstar Aamir Khan, along with Rahul Bose, yesterday joined the list of celebrities lending support to the (NBA).
Stating that he was moved after hearing the sufferings of thousands of farmers who had been displaced and needed help for rehabilitation, Aamir said,''my voice goes in the support of those who are seeking government's help in their rehabilitation. I am not aware of all the facts on the dam or its height, but what basically moved me was the sufferings of those who had lost their home, land, and jobs.'' ''I urge the Prime Minister to listen to the sufferers of the Bhopal tragedy and those uprooted by the Narmada dam construction.
I am sure that after hearing them something positive would certainly come out for them,'' he added.
The NBA has been demanding immediate stopping of the construction of the dam until all affected families are rehabilitated as per Supreme Court directives.
