Manipur bandh to protest kidnapping of two persons
Imphal, Apr 15 (UNI) The Manipur bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed to inquire into the disappearance of Md Salimuddin and his nephew in Nagaland, affected life today.
All inter-state bus services were cancelled. Very few vehicles plied on the road.
The strike which began at 1700 hrs yesterday would conclude at 1700 hours today. The strike had little impact yesterday as people celebrated 'Cheiraoba,' (Manipuri New Year) and observed Good Friday. were celebrated in the state.
The strike supporters came out on the streets and broke glasses to stop movement of people today.
At Hatta, police had rounded up the strike supporters and asked them to clean the roads, which were littered with broken glasses, burnt tyres and woods.
All educational institutes, business establishments and banks were closed down.
The strike was supported by All Manipur Drivers and Motor Workers Union.
The JAC said Md Salimuddin and his nephew were coming to Nagaland from Asom on January 24 and they suddenly disappeared. The truck, they were travelling, was allegedly in the custody of a militant group of Nagaland.
