Man gets 3-yr jail for killing national bird

Junagadh, Apr 15 (UNI) A local court sentenced an a man to three-year imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000 for killing three peacocks in the adjoining Rajpara range of Gir forest 12 years ago.

Also, if he fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo another six months' imprisonment.

According to prosecution, Jika Gora, a dalit, had killed three national birds in July, 1994. He was caught by the forest officials, and the carcasses were seized, The accused was chargesheeted, but was on bail all these years.

After hearing both the sides and looking into circumstantial evidences, Judge A M Dave announced the verdict yesterday.
