Karunanidhi diverting people's attention: Jaya

Written by: Staff

Chennai, Apr 15 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today accused DMK President M Karunanidhi of attempting to divert people's attention after having made poll promises that could not be fulfilled.

In a statement here, she took a dig at Mr Karunanidhi's promise that his party, if voted to power, would distribute two acres of land each to landless farmers from 55 lakh acres of wasteland available in the state.

Ms Jayalalithaa said she had clarified to newspersons that the Government had only 3.57 lakh acres of wasteland at its disposal, while the rest was in private possession. Most of the wasteland owned by the Government were not cultivable, she added.

But Mr Karunanidhi was attempting to distort her version by alleging that she was making contradictory statements, she charged.

Pointing out to the DMK chief's statement that his party would acquire the wasteland owned by private parties and distribute them to the poor, the Chief Minister said most of the land owners were small farmers and farm labourers. It would be an act of injustice, if the land were taken away from them, she said.

''Instead of providing grant to the small wasteland holders to develop their lands and bring prosperity to their lives, DMK proposes to acquire them and render them landless,'' she charged.

The Aiadmk chief said under her Government's Integrated Wasteland Development Scheme, as much as 4.22 lakh acres of land had been made fertile.

A subsidy of Rs 71.46 crore had been provided to poor farmers to develop their land and the scheme had benefitted nearly 1.18 lakh farmers, she added.
