Chandigarh, Apr 15 (UNI) The Punjab unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) today said it will try to form a Left and secular third front in the next state assembly elections.

''Defeating the Akali Dal-BJP communal combine is the party's main objective in Punjab and in realising this objective, the party will try its best in forging a Left and secular third alternative while having no alliance or front with the Congress,'' Punjab CPI (M) secretary Balwant Singh said in a statement issued here.

He said the CPI leadership should rethink its political tactical line in the state so that a strong third alternative could be created to defeat both the Akali-BJP combine and the Congress.

He, however, said the party had resolved in its meeting here today not to have alliance with the CPI(M) splinter group of Mangat Ram Pasla and the Layalpuri-led Marxist Communist Party of India (MCPI) for the third front as the CPI(M) found both these parties ''not qualifying as Left parties''.
