Chennai, Apr 15 (UNI) Latchiya Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (LDMK) President Vijaya T Rajenthar, who quit the DMK and formed his own party, today announced his candidature from the Mayiladuthurai Assembly constituency for the May 8 polls in Tamil Nadu.

Releasing his party's list of candidates, the former DMK Propaganda Secretary said the LDMK had decided to contest 11 seats in the polls.

''The party workers had sought ticket from 65 seats. But we have decided to contest in 11 constituencies, which were identified as prospective seats'', he added.

Mr Rajenthar, who had been supporting the ruling AIADMK for the last one-and-a-half years and had even campaigned for it in the bypolls to Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi seats, decided to go it alone in the polls to maintain self-respect after his party was offered only one seat.

He also had a dig at actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth for dreaming to come to power overnight after forming a new political party.

Having criticised the DMK's promise of providing Rs 2 kg rice under the Public Distribution system, Mr Vijayakanth's promise of providing 15 kg of free rice to the poor was aimed at hoodwinking the people. ''The people will not believe it'', he added.

Apart from Mayiladuthurai from where Mr Rajenthar would seek election, the LDMK would contest from Tiruparankundram, Perur, Perunthurai, Poonammallee, Cheyyar, Ariyalur, Sedapatti, Srivilluputtur, Tiruvaadanai and Chengalpattu.
