7 die, 12 injured as truck runs over them

Bhuj, Apr 15 (UNI) Seven pilgrims were killed and 12 sustained injuries, one seriously, when a truck ran over them on the coastal highway near Dumra village of Kutch district, about 90 km from here.

According to police, the victims, residents of Koday village of Mandvi and members of the Maheswari Samaj, were making their way on foot to Naliya to pay homage to their family God Matia Dev when the accident occurred late last night.

The truck was bound for Sanghipuram from Mundra port. The driver apparently lost balance and the truck skidded-off the highway and fell on the bed of a small rivulet. The pilgrims, who were walking along the road, were run over by the truck, the police said.

The deceased have been identified as - Dhondu Puda, Bansi Kishan Madi, Bhaji Sind Madi, Kishan Raju Sonavane, Gurnig Rameshsingh Sonavane, Bimrao More and Arjun Sival, while the 12 injured have been admitted to Sanjivani hospital near Surat, the police added.
