Tamil New Year celebrated in Pondy

Pondicherry, Apr 14 (UNI) Tamil New Year's day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm here today.

Dressed in new clothes, people exchanged greetings and offered prayers at temples. Long queues could be seen before the famous Manakkula Vinayagar Temple here since early morning.

Wishing people prosperity, peace and happiness in the New Year 'Vivya,' Lt Governor M M Lakhera said it was an occasion for celebration by Tamils all over the world.

According to ancient lore, Lord Brahma started his work of creation on the day and hence is considered auspicious for making a new beginning.

Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Comittee President P Shanmugham, PMK Parliamentary Party Leader Ramadass and several other political leaders also greeted the people on the occasion.
