New Delhi, Apr 14 (UNI) Working Journalists and mediapersons today held a demonstration outside the Nepalese Embassy here, demanding an immediate halt to "suppression of the press" in the Himalayan Kingdom.

The demonstration was organised by the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) to protest against the lathicharge on the journalists and arresting some of them by the Royal Nepalese government during pro-democracy movement there.

Condemning the Royal Nepalese government's attempts to muzzle the press there, DUJ President S K Pande said targeting and intimidating journalists would help strengthen the pro-democracy movement in Nepal. It is better for the Royal administration to allow the free flow of information among the people as such tactics are bound to boomerang against the King who cannot thwart the march of democracy in Nepal, Mr Pande added.

The DUJ further called upon the Indian Government to take up with the Nepalese Royal government the issue of ongoing repression on journalists, intellectuals, students and common people by the monarchic forces there. UNI/JSS ARB BST2039
