Good Friday observed in Bengal

Kolkata, Apr 14 (UNI) Good Friday, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, was observed in West Bengal today with due solemnity and religious fervour.

As part of the day-long programmes, mass prayers were held in all the churches where a large number of people, belonging to the Christian community, took part.

While Bishop of Kolkata Rev P S P Raju conducted the main mass and led the congregation in the city's main St Pauls Cathedral, large number of people also congregated at the famous Bandel church in neighbouring Hooghly district for the same purpose since morning.

Distribution of sweets and fruits among the needy and the poor in different slums and among patients in various hospitals by several organisations also marked the day.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi has conveyed his best wishes to all Bengali-speaking people around the world on the eve of Bengali New Year day.

''I pray to the almighty that the festivity of the New Year tomorrow will bring in new direction and joy in life to all the people in the state, '' the Governor said today in his New Year's message.
